I am now learning the basics in Autodesk Maya 2011, and I have to say I like it. Maya is a very complex and hard program to learn, with so many tools and short cuts, to learn and understand it takes months of practice at it to become a pro.
I had never used Maya before so it was challenging, however I did watch a lot of tutorials giving me some knowledge of the program. In class I practice using the software and got use to the interface and learning a number of the tools and short cuts.
So far in Maya, I have started to learn how to creating polygonal objects and model them using the tools. This is the first modeling technique I have learned in Maya and is considered to be industry stranded. With this method I was able to model of an apple. Here is it, followed by the steps taken to created it and add the texture.
Modeling an Apple
When creating the apple, the first thing we were ask to do was gather some reference images. These images where to be the front and bottom perspective of it. I chose to model after a green apple ( I like Green apples). Once having got these images we assign them to the grid. The front image of the apple place was put in a front view and the bottom image of the apple place beneath the grid.
Once in place, I created a sphere use the polygon tool. I used a sphere as it is the easiest object to model an apple in. The second thing I did was make the object transparent allowing me to now see the image of the apple behind. This was done using the x-ray tool .
As I could now see the image behind it. The next step was for me to used the Lattice tool to shape the object. The Lattice tool allowed me to manipulate the vertexes of the sphere. Using this tool I form the apple as close as possible to that of the image.
Once I was happy with the shape I made the dents to the apple at the front and bottom of the it. I made the steams for the apple using the cylinder tool. I made a small cylinder scale the top face out and bent it.
Finally I added the texture to it. I did this by assigning the texture to the object. I used blinn to give it the glow.
